The Department of English, in collaboration with the Eastern University English Club, successfully organized a professional grooming session titled “English Graduates in the Corporate World: Scopes & Opportunities” on Tuesday, 15 July 2025. The event took place in the Rezakul Haider Hall, Eastern University. The primary objective of this session was to make the students familiar with diverse career opportunities available to English graduates in the corporate sector. Besides, the program aimed to raise awareness regarding skills, emerging job roles, and effective strategies for professional advancement beyond conventional academic domains.
The event was graced by Professor Dr. Farid A. Sobhani, Honorable Vice Chancellor of Eastern University, who attended as the Chief Guest. The session was presided over by Md. Rofiussan, Chairperson of the Department of English. The program was coordinated by Khaled Mahmud and Anjuma Tasnim, both lecturers in the Department of English. The session was hosted by Shafayet Hossain, President of the Eastern University English Club, and Nushrat Jahan Dula, Executive Member of the same club.
The session was facilitated by Mr. Abid Uddin Mahmud, CPP, PCI, PSP, Deputy General Manager (Retail Operations & Administration) at United Group. Mr. Mahmud is a dynamic corporate professional with over two decades of experience in operations, administration, and leadership. His career includes key positions in prominent organizations such as United Group, Beximco Communications Ltd., and British American Tobacco.
In his opening address, Md. Rofiussan welcomed the distinguished facilitator and expressed deep appreciation for his commitment to supporting the academic and professional development of students. He emphasized the significant career prospects for English graduates in both academic and corporate spheres, and commended the department's alumni who have excelled in various national, international, and government sectors.
Mr. Mahmud conducted an engaging and interactive session, during which he stated current professional trends and highlighted how English graduates can align their strengths with emerging career opportunities. Furthermore, he discussed non-STEM career pathways and underlined the importance of a diverse sets of skills including communication, adaptability, leadership, and emotional intelligence for success in the 21st-century workplace. His session was particularly valuable in demonstrating how English graduates can transcend traditional career expectations and thrive in dynamic corporate roles.
Chief Guest Professor Dr. Farid A. Sobhani, honorable Vice Chancellor of EU, delivered an inspiring address, urging students to equip themselves with contemporary skills essential for professional competitiveness. He highlighted the evolving significance of English studies in higher education and highlighted the versatile future prospects associated with the discipline.
The session was coordinated by Mohammad Asad-Uj-Jaman, an alumnus of the Department of English, who is currently serving as Regional Officer in the Department of Security, Risk, and Investigation at British American Tobacco Bangladesh. He shared his personal academic journey at Eastern University. Expressing sincere gratitude to his former faculty members, he encouraged current students to foster meaningful connections with alumni, who can serve as valuable mentors and guides in navigating their professional paths.In his concluding remarks, Md. Rofiussan extended heartfelt thanks to the keynote speaker for his resourceful presentation, to the alumnus for his support, to the faculty members for their dedicated efforts, and to the Eastern University English Club for their active cooperation in making the event a resounding success.
