Eastern University organized a motivational workshop on “Accreditation in Higher Education in Bangladesh” on 19 August 2026 at its campus. The program was organized by the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) to create awareness about accreditation and promote a culture of quality and continuous improvement.
Prof. Dr. Farid A. Sobhani, Honorable Vice-Chancellor of Eastern University, chaired the program. Prof. Dr. Md. Shah Amran, Full-time Member of the Bangladesh Accreditation Council (BAC), attended as the Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker, while Prof. Nasir Uddin Ahmed, Director (Accreditation), BAC, attended as the Special Guest and Discussant.
In his address, Prof. Dr. Farid A. Sobhani said Ashulia is becoming a “higher education city,” with five universities, including Eastern University, located in the area. He said the concentration of universities provides an opportunity to develop Ashulia as an important higher education hub. He also expressed hope that the electricity-related challenges in the area could be addressed through government initiatives. He highlighted the importance of a dedicated IQAC and said Eastern University has separated the IQAC Cell from regular university responsibilities so that it can work with greater focus on quality assurance and accreditation.
Prof. Dr. Md. Shah Amran highlighted the importance of accreditation for student and graduate mobility in the global higher education system. He emphasized maintaining required standards, regular engagement with BAC and following the accreditation guidelines. He also stressed the importance of ensuring reasonable and adequate salaries for faculty members so they can meet their regular living needs and maintain financial security. He discussed internal and external quality assurance and the role of accreditation in ensuring quality education.
Prof. Nasir Uddin Ahmed explained the requirements and rules for achieving accreditation and said the relevant accreditation guidelines are provided by BAC for reference. He encouraged universities to understand and properly follow the requirements during the accreditation process.
Treasurer Prof. Md. Shamsul Huda thanked the guests and participants and spoke about the importance of quality education. He said applying an Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum is beneficial for an institution in ensuring quality and achieving academic goals.
Registrar Dr. Abul Basher Khan said quality is closely connected with ethics and morality. He described accreditation as a commitment to quality and continuous improvement and said quality cannot be measured by a single factor. He expressed hope that Eastern University will become a leading university among the universities in the country.
Former IQAC Director Dr. Md. Ashraf Hossain, Professor of Business Administration, shared his previous experience of working with IQAC. Prof. Dr. S.M. Shirazi, CEng, the newly appointed Director of IQAC, organized the program, which was coordinated by Associate Professor Md. Maidul Islam, Assistant Director of IQAC.The program was attended by university officials, faculty members and other concerned stakeholders. Following the workshop, a meeting was held between representatives of BAC and the Department of Pharmacy of Eastern University to discuss accreditation-related matters.
