The Department of English, Eastern University organized a colorful event marking the inauguration of the wall magazine, Think, and Shakespeare Fest-2025 on Monday, May 20, 2025. Professor Md. Shamsul Huda, Vice Chancellor (Acting) of Eastern University, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Md. Rofiussan, Assistant Professor and Chairperson of the Department of English, presided over the ceremony.
The program commenced with the inauguration of the wall magazine, Think, a regular platform of the department that brings to light the creative writings such as poems, short stories, and essays of both students and faculty members of the Department of English, Eastern University. The whole process of bringing out the wall magazine was directly supervised by Humaira Shegufta Chowdhury, Senior Lecturer, Department of English.
The inauguration ceremony was followed by Shakespeare Fest 2025, an event organized to commemorate the birth anniversary of William Shakespeare, legendary English poet and playwright. In his welcome speech, the chairperson of the Department of English, Md. Rofiussan, pointed out the importance of Shakespeare’s contributions to English language and literature calling upon the students to explore his works more intimately. After that a series of engaging contests centering on Shakespeare’s life and works swept off the audience. One of the highlights was the skit competition, where students put on both solo and group performances from different Shakespearean plays like The Merchant of Venice and Macbeth. These performances brought the Bard’s works to life. Additionally, under the supervision of Khaled Mahmud, Lecturer, Department of English, first-semester students arranged a poster presentation displaying their illustrations of various themes from Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets.
The event also featured a poetry competition, where students recited different Shakespearean sonnets. An instant quiz on Shakespeare’s life and works took place to test the participating students’ knowledge in a playful manner. Later on, Professor Shamsul Huda, honorable Vice Chancellor (Acting) of EU gave away the Prizes to the winners of the competitions recognizing their brilliance and creativity. The whole ceremony was conducted by Kazi Tahmina, Assistant Professor, Department of English.
In the concluding speech, Professor Shamsul Huda, honorable Vice Chancellor (Acting), praised the students highly for their mesmerizing performances and appreciated the faculty members for their collaborative efforts in organizing this successful program. He emphasized the importance of such initiatives in promoting a love for literature and critical thinking among students of the Department of English. Shakespeare Fest-2025 has, undoubtedly, left a lasting impression on all attendees inspiring a renewed appreciation for art and literature.
