The Department of English at Eastern University hosted the Freshers' Reception on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, in the Conference Room of EU to welcome the newly admitted students of Summer 2025 semester. The program aimed to introduce the new students to the department’s core values, mission, academic frameworks, and institutional policies, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of their academic environment. Professor Dr. Farid A. Sobhani, the Vice Chancellor of Eastern University attended the ceremony as the chief guest. The program was presided over by Md. Rofiussan, the Chairperson of the Department of English. In his opening remarks, Md. Rofiussan warmly welcomed all newly admitted students of Summer 2025 semester. He highlighted the department's long-standing academic practices and the legacy of excellence that the Department of English is known for. The faculty members of the department introduced themselves to the students, initiating an academic and professional rapport with the incoming students. Dr. Farid Ahammad Sobhani delivered an inspiring address, emphasizing the importance of academic rigor, effective communication, and collaborative learning in today’s fast-evolving academic landscape. His speech motivated students to engage in intellectual pursuit and uphold high standards in their academic journey. To help the students navigate their academic and administrative responsibilities, Najnin Parvin, the Assistant Registrar of the Department of English, demonstrated how to use the student portal on the university’s website. She explained how they can access essential information regarding registration, track their academic performance, and manage financial details, equipping them with the necessary tools for academic success. The program was coordinated by Khaled Mahmud, Lecturer in the Department of English, and was hosted by Shafayat Hossain, President of the Eastern University English Club, and Amana Akter Akhi, Visual Media Curator of the same club. Concluding the program, Md. Rofiussan extended special thanks to the Eastern University English Club for their cooperation and wished the new students every success in their academic journey.

An MoA was signed on 1st July 2025, between Eastern University and the Daffodil Response Center (DRC) at the Eastern University campus, Ashulia Model Town, Dhaka. The agreement aims to strengthen capacity building and institutional branding of Eastern University. Professor Dr. Farid A. Sobhani, Vice Chancellor of Eastern University, and Dr. Mohammad Nuruzzaman, Chief Executive Officer of the Daffodil Family, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective institutions. This collaboration seeks to enhance institutional capacity through professional engagement and the development of advanced skills among relevant officials. It is expected to contribute to improved enrollment quality, greater empowerment, and stronger collaboration between the two institutions. This milestone agreement marks the beginning of a long-term, impactful partnership that is expected to yield mutual benefits and sustainable success. The signing ceremony was attended by the Registrar, Deans of various faculties, Departmental Chairpersons, section heads of administrative units, and senior officials from DRC.

A seminar titled "Prospects of Higher Studies and International Work Permit Visa in Japan" held on 30th June 2025 at University's Rezakul Haider Hall, Ashulia Model Town, Dhaka. The Chief Guest at the event was Professor Dr. Farid A. Sobhani, Vice Chancellor of Eastern University. The Special guests were Mr. Morisu Narita, CEO of Winkle Inc. (Japan), and Mr. Md. Rafiqul Islam, Managing Director of Samaira Group and MP Travels Ltd. The seminar was chaired by Professor Dr. Md. Mahfuzur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Eastern University. Professor Dr. M. Sayedur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, was also present as a respected guest. Other speakers at the event included Associate Professor Syed Habib Anwar Pasha, Chairperson of the Department of Business Administration, and Ms. Rakhi Roy, Coordinator at Samaira Group. The overall coordination of the event was managed by Mr. K. M. Monirul Islam, Deputy Director of Career Services and International Office and Office of the Student Affairs at the university. At this event, university graduate students Umme Sumaiya Hossain and Ratna Akter Badhon shared their experiences after completing their internships in Japan. They recently returned to the country after finishing their internships in Tokyo, Japan. They encouraged everyone to pursue higher education opportunities in Japan. The speakers shared important information about studying in Japan, how to get a student or work visa, and job opportunities in Japanese companies. The seminar helped students learn about real steps to build a career abroad, especially in Japan. One great example of success is Md. Mansurul Haque Rashed, a recent graduate from the Department of Business Administration. He got a full-time job at Mon Napoleon Co. Ltd. in Japan after completing a competitive internship program. This was possible through the university’s collaboration with Samaira Group and Othelo Financial Institution, Japan. This success was made possible by the leadership of Prof. Dr. Md. Mahfuzur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Eastern University. This seminar showed Eastern University’s strong dedication to helping students build international careers. Many graduates from Eastern University are now studying and working in Japan, making the university proud.

Eastern University proudly welcomed its newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Farid A. Sobhani, in a warm reception held on Sunday, 25 May 2025, at 2:30 PM at Rezakul Haider Hall. The event brought together faculty members, officials, and staff from all departments in a spirit of unity and celebrate the beginning of a new chapter for the university under Professor Sobhani’s leadership. The reception featured welcome speeches from several distinguished members of the academic community: Professor Md. Shamsul Huda, Treasurer Professor Dr. Md. Abbas Ali Khan, Distinguished Professor Professor Dr. M. M. Shahidul Hassan, Distinguished Professor Professor Dr. M. Sayedur Rahman, Dean, Faculty of Business Professor Dr. Md. Mahfuzur Rahman, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology A.B.M. Imdadul Haque Khan, Dean, Faculty of Law The speakers extended a heartfelt welcome to Professor Dr. Farid A. Sobhani and expressed confidence that under his visionary leadership, Eastern University will achieve its academic and institutional goals, further solidifying its position as one of the top universities in Bangladesh. In his inaugural address, the Vice-Chancellor expressed his gratitude to the Board of Trustees and all stakeholders for entrusting him with the responsibility to lead the university. He pledged his full commitment to advancing the institution’s academic excellence, research initiatives, and overall development. Seeking cooperation from faculty, staff, and administration, he emphasized a collaborative approach to raise the university to new heights. The program was conducted by Dr. Abul Basher Khan, Registrar of Eastern University. The gathering reflected a strong sense of unity and optimism for the university’s future.

The Department of English, Eastern University organized a colorful event marking the inauguration of the wall magazine, Think, and Shakespeare Fest-2025 on Monday, May 20, 2025. Professor Md. Shamsul Huda, Vice Chancellor (Acting) of Eastern University, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Md. Rofiussan, Assistant Professor and Chairperson of the Department of English, presided over the ceremony. The program commenced with the inauguration of the wall magazine, Think, a regular platform of the department that brings to light the creative writings such as poems, short stories, and essays of both students and faculty members of the Department of English, Eastern University. The whole process of bringing out the wall magazine was directly supervised by Humaira Shegufta Chowdhury, Senior Lecturer, Department of English. The inauguration ceremony was followed by Shakespeare Fest 2025, an event organized to commemorate the birth anniversary of William Shakespeare, legendary English poet and playwright. In his welcome speech, the chairperson of the Department of English, Md. Rofiussan, pointed out the importance of Shakespeare’s contributions to English language and literature calling upon the students to explore his works more intimately. After that a series of engaging contests centering on Shakespeare’s life and works swept off the audience. One of the highlights was the skit competition, where students put on both solo and group performances from different Shakespearean plays like The Merchant of Venice and Macbeth. These performances brought the Bard’s works to life. Additionally, under the supervision of Khaled Mahmud, Lecturer, Department of English, first-semester students arranged a poster presentation displaying their illustrations of various themes from Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets. The event also featured a poetry competition, where students recited different Shakespearean sonnets. An instant quiz on Shakespeare’s life and works took place to test the participating students’ knowledge in a playful manner. Later on, Professor Shamsul Huda, honorable Vice Chancellor (Acting) of EU gave away the Prizes to the winners of the competitions recognizing their brilliance and creativity. The whole ceremony was conducted by Kazi Tahmina, Assistant Professor, Department of English. In the concluding speech, Professor Shamsul Huda, honorable Vice Chancellor (Acting), praised the students highly for their mesmerizing performances and appreciated the faculty members for their collaborative efforts in organizing this successful program. He emphasized the importance of such initiatives in promoting a love for literature and critical thinking among students of the Department of English. Shakespeare Fest-2025 has, undoubtedly, left a lasting impression on all attendees inspiring a renewed appreciation for art and literature.

Eastern University is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Dr. Farid A. Sobhani as its new Vice-Chancellor, effective May 24, 2025. His appointment was made by the Chancellor of the University and Hon’ble President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Prior to this role, Prof. Dr. Sobhani served as Professor at the School of Business and Economics and Director of the Center for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC) at United International University (UIU). He also held the positions of Professor and Dean at the Human Resource Development Institute (HRDI) of Daffodil International University, and Professor and Dean at the Faculty of Business Studies, International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC). Additionally, he served as Director of the MBA Program at the School of Business and Economics, UIU. Prof. Sobhani currently serves as a Visiting Professor at Sol Plaatje University, South Africa; and a Research Fellow at the Australian Academy of Business Leadership in Sydney. He also serves as the President of the Bangladesh Society for Private University Academics (BSPUA) and Vice-President of the Federation of Bangladesh Human Resource Organizations (FBHRO). He served as a Visiting Professor at the Accounting Research Institute (ARI) of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia. He has also served as an External Member of the Curriculum Committee at Rajshahi University and the PhD Program Committee at the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP). Furthermore, he held the position of Editor of the Australian Journal of Accounting, Economics, and Finance, published from Sydney. An accomplished academic, Dr. Sobhani holds a BBA and MBA in Accounting from the University of Chittagong, a second Master’s in Project Management from the University of Antwerp, Belgium, and a PhD from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). He has published nearly 100 research articles in national and international journals covering accounting, corporate disclosure, human resource management, and leadership. A native of Pakundia Upazila, Kishoreganj, Dr. Sobhani’s appointment was celebrated in a reception ceremony held at the University Conference Room. The event was graced by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Md. Moniruzzaman Molla; Former Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Md. Shamsul Huda; the Treasurer, Deans, Chairpersons, Advisors, Registrar, and other senior officials. Eastern University looks forward to Prof. Dr. Sobhani’s visionary leadership in advancing academic excellence and driving institutional growth.

The Independence Day 2nd Inter-department Cricket Tournament was officially inaugurated on 21 April 2025 at the Eastern University Playground. A total of eight teams are participating in the tournament, including a team comprising faculty members and officials, aimed at fostering stronger bonds between students, faculty and officials. Professor Md. Shamsul Huda, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Eastern University, unveiled the tournament trophy and formally declared the event open. Dr. Abul Basher Khan, Registrar of Eastern University, along with chairpersons of academic departments, faculty members, and officials, were also present at the opening ceremony. The tournament group matches will take place from 21 to 23 April 2025, providing a platform for participants to demonstrate their talent, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
