Master of Arts in English Language Teaching (MA in ELT)

The Department of English at Eastern University offers the Master of Arts in English Language Teaching (MA in ELT), a comprehensive graduate program designed to develop learners' theoretical understanding and practical application of English Language Teaching (ELT) in the dynamic context of the 21st century.

The one-year MA in ELT programme is designed to empower English language learners and educators with advanced pedagogical, andragogical, and heutagogical expertise by integrating theory with practice through a combination of research-based coursework, innovative teaching methodologies, reflective practice, and hands-on classroom experience, facilitated by an Outcome-Based Education (OBE) that aligns with both local higher education and international academic benchmarks.

The MA in ELT programme spans 38 credit hours and is delivered across three consecutive semesters. This academic schedule culminates in the successful completion of twelve courses. These courses ensure a holistic engagement with the field, requiring learners to:

• Complete a series of advanced core and elective courses that explore cutting-edge methodologies, applied linguistics, curriculum design, and assessment practices,
• Pass a viva voce examination, demonstrating comprehensive mastery on the subject.
• Undertake a capstone experience, choosing between:
  • - A Dissertation: An independent, sustained piece of academic research contributing original insights to the field of ELT.
  • - ​An Internship: A guided, practical engagement with an academic institution or professional setting, ensuring the practical application of theoretical knowledge and the development of professional competencies.

This structure guarantees that graduates are prepared for diverse career trajectories, ranging from advanced academic research to leadership roles in language education and curriculum development.

For the admission into the M.A. in ELT (English Language Teaching) program, a candidate must demonstrate adequate prior academic preparation.

• OR must have successfully passed the M.A. (Preliminary) in English.
